Some people are just a mess. And sometimes messes just follow people. It’s nothing to feel guilty about. We are usually busy and cleaning is the least of our priorities. If you have the courage to admit you are a messy person, here are five tips to stay on top of your mess before it consumes you.

1) Set a mess trap: If you always throw things in places where they shouldn’t be, designate a spot to throw them. You could have a laundry basket in your room where you commonly place objects you don’t want to put away. You can also designate a space, drawer or shelf in your office for things you will organize later. Just remember to go into your designated “mess space” every once in a while and sort it out.

2) Make it fun: Play your favorite music, sing, or talk on the phone as you organize or clean your mess.

3) Schedule: Pick one day a week that you commit to cleaning and/or organizing. You will be amazed what 15 minute every week can do.

4) Trash it: Don’t be afraid to throw things away. Sometimes our mess is actually trash that isn’t worth giving designated space. Clothes are sometimes the biggest mess. Donate your clothes to the Salvation Army.

5) Remember: Your living space is a reflection of your life, and your workspace is a reflection of your work. Keeping them organized can help you become more productive.
